Drunken driver charged in fatal crash

HOUSTON – A woman was killed when a drunk driver hit the car she was sitting in Sunday morning.

According to investigators, it happened around 3:15 a.m. when a group of four people was driving on North Sam Houston Parkway in a Lexus sedan.

The hood of the car, which was being held down by rope, suddenly popped open. Officers say the woman who was driving pulled off to the right side of the road and turned on the vehicle's hazard lights.

The driver and a man sitting in the front seat got out to secure the hood. As they were tying it down, they noticed a white pickup truck speeding toward them.

According to police, the man tried to signal the driver and warn him that he was about to hit the car. When they realized the driver wasn't going to stop, both the man and woman jumped out of the way.

The truck, driven by 19-yera-old Sergio Sanchez Jr., slammed into the back of the Lexus, where two other passengers were still sitting in the backseat.

Investigators say the force of the impact caused Jacqueline Rocha, 23, to be ejected from the car. She died at the scene.

The other woman who was sitting in the car was transported to the hospital in serious but stable condition. The man and the woman who managed to jump out of the way were not injured.

Officers say Sanchez was drunk and was arrested at the scene.

He was taken to the Harris County Jail where he was charged with intoxicated assault with vehicle and intoxicated manslaughter with vehicle.
