There will be a lot of parties and family gatherings over the holiday weekend, but local law enforcement want to remind everyone there is a serious side to the Fourth of July weekend.
The Harris County Precinct 1 Constable's Office has teamed up with Mothers Against Drunk Driving to spread awareness about driving under the influence.
"People lose a child or a parent in such a negative type of way and it's totally preventable," said Jeanette Einkauf, with MADD.
Precinct 1 will have 10 to 12 additional units patrolling the streets on Friday and Saturday nights. They'll operate on a no refusal basis, which means anyone suspected of driving drunk cannot say no to a blood test.
"We want you to have a good time, but if you're going to be driving drunk, you're going to go to jail," said Precinct 1 spokesperson JC Mosier.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, last year there were more than 1,100 DWI arrests across the state between June 27 and July 7.
