A deadly hit-and-run accident in northwest Harris County has left investigators with a lot of unanswered questions.
Around 3 a.m. Thursday, a driver called 911 and told the dispatcher that a man was hit while walking in the northbound lanes of Barker Cypress near Canyon Cypress.
"We assume he was probably walking across the street," said Sgt. S. Wolverton with the Harris County Sheriff's Office. "It is not a very well-lit area, it's pretty dark. So it would be very difficult to see pedestrians in the roadway. So certainly if we were assigning fault to the crash, it would be assigned to the pedestrian."
The victim, 21-year-old Augustin Jaimes Sierra, died at scene.
Investigators don't have a description of the car or its driver, but broken glass was found near Sierra's body. They believe the car that hit him has damage to the front end.
"Why the [driver] did not remain on the scene, that's unknown," said Sgt. Wolverton. "It being 3 a.m., of course you have to assume alcohol may have been involved."
If the driver is found, deputies said he or she will be charged with failure to stop and render aid.
Anyone with information on this fatality accident is asked to contact the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Enforcement Division (TED) at 713-274-7400.
