Driver attacks deputy after crashing into electrical pole, investigators say

HOUSTON – A man is facing assault charges after investigators say he attacked a deputy after a crash in Atascocita.

Witnesses say the man was speeding at around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday night on West Lake Houston Parkway and east FM 1960, when he lost control, went airborne and hit a wooden electrical pole,

An off-duty deputy working security at a nearby shopping mall saw the crash and drove over to help. When both men got out of their cars, investigators say the man suddenly attacked the deputy. 

A wrecker driver saw the attack and ran to help. Deputies say he pulled the man off the officer and hit the man in the head with a flashlight.

The man was taken into custody and charged with assault of a peace officer. 

The crash split the electrical pole and briefly cut power to thousands of homes and businesses nearby.
