Police said Officer Crystal Torres was driving to work to the Northside Substation in her private car around 10:30 p.m. when she was cut off by a pickup truck on Highway 281 and Nakoma. That's when Jose Rivera fired several shots in Torres' direction, police said.

One of the bullets hit Torres' police radio that she was wearing on her utility belt, police said.

"She is shaken up but she is not physically injured," McManus said.

Torres called police dispatch and began to follow Rivera until officers caught up with the suspect in the 12700 block of O'Connor Road, on the city's Northeast Side.

Rivera was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Torres has been with the department since May 2013.
