HOUSTON -

Police arrested a driver they said was hiding after causing a crash in southeast Houston.

According to reports, the driver was speeding north on Highway 288 in a pickup Thursday night when he slammed into the side of a car, sending it spinning off the road.

Police said the pickup skidded onto the shoulder of the freeway, and the driver jumped out and ran into the heavy overgrowth in a nearby field.

"One of the drivers [...] exited his vehicle, and witnesses observed him run off into the brush area off to the side of the freeway," said Captain Kenneth Campbell, with the Night Command Security Operations Division of the Houston Police Department.

After an extensive search with a K-9 unit and a helicopter, HPD found the driver hiding in some shrubs and arrested him.

"At this time, we're conducting a follow-up investigation related to the crash itself, as well as alcohol possibly being related to this incident," said Capt. Campbell.

At this point, the driver faces charges for failing to stop and give information.  His name was not immediately released.
