HOUSTON - A Corpus Christi man appeared before a Fort Bend County judge for the time since being accused of causing a horrific crash that claimed the life of a 66-year-old woman.
Today was a day Doris Walters' family has waited to see for nearly three years.
"I'll be here. I'll be here every time he's here. I'll be here," said widower Jerry Walters.
Court records show Billy Gene McDade was behind the wheel of an 18-wheeler that slammed into the back of Walters' car while she was stopped in traffic along Highway 59. Nearly a year after the July 19, 2011, crash a Fort Bend county grand jury declined to indict McDade on any criminal charges.
However, Walters' family persisted and convinced a judge to have a second grand jury look at the case. The second grand jury did indict McDade on charges of criminally negligent homicide.
McDade was released on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond and ordered to submit to drug and alcohol testing. He is scheduled to again appear in court on March 24.
