Dozens gather to remember fallen Houston firefighters

Annual Houston Firefighters' Memorial Ceremony honors 64 members

HOUSTON – Dozens gathered Saturday to remember the fire fighters who lost their lives in the line of duty.

The annual Houston Firefighters' Memorial Ceremony honored the 64 members of the Houston Fire Department who have died in the line of duty, as well as all members who are gone, but not forgotten, officials said.

It took place at the Houston Firefighters' Memorial Garden in the 4200 block of Interwood North Parkway on Saturday.

Houston Mayor Annise Parker spoke at the event, but she said Saturday's memorial wasn't about the words or ceremony.

"Today is about respect, it is about honor, and it is about memory," said Parker.

Chief Terry Garrison said firefighters know everyday their lives are at risk, but that doesn't stop them from doing their job.

"We accept the fact that firefighting is an inherently dangerous profession, but we do it anyway because that's what we are called for," said Garrison.

Parker said those called to public service are a special breed.

"We recognize all those in public service, in whatever capacity, who rise each day determined to do their best and to give their best for those they serve," said Parker.

The ceremony ended with a bell ring for each fallen firefighter's name called, and a fire helmet set atop the memorial wall.
