HOUSTON – The man accused of burning down the Gallery Furniture flagship store off the North Freeway in 2009 was ruled not competent to stand trial by his doctor.
In a hearing Wednesday, Dr. Mark Moeller confirmed that he does not believe Robert Gilliam, 73, is competent to stand trial.
Gilliam, who is charged with arson, has spent the last few years in a mental health facility, after he was accused of setting fire to the store, because he was angry for getting fired. The fire caused $20 million in damages.
Gilliam was ruled competent to stand trial on Feb. 2, but Wednesday Moeller testified that he thought Gilliam was delusional and will not regain competency for a trial.
Around 120 Houston firefighters fought the warehouse fire at 6006 North Freeway. Dozens of customers were inside the showroom at the time of the fire, but no one was hurt.
