Developer moves large oak trees, donates them to city park

HOUSTON – It was quite a sight in Greenway Plaza as crews moved four large oak trees to their new home.

A realty group plans to develop properties near Richmond and Buffalo Speedway, but instead of cutting down some of the massive oaks on the site, the group decided to donate the trees to the Houston Parks and Recreation Department.

"Since Houston lost so many trees over the last couple of years due to the drought we wanted to try and make sure that didn't happen on this property," said John Castilla, with PM Realty Group.

Each tree is 20 years old, weighs 35,000 pounds and is 12 feet in diameter. Crews plan to deliver the trees to their new home at Keith-Weiss Park on Saturday morning.
