Detention officer accused of smuggling tobacco into jail

Gertrudis A. Reyes is a former detention officer accused of smuggling tobacco into the Harris County Jail.

HARRIS COUNTY – A former detention officer was arrested after allegedly smuggling contraband into the Harris County Jail.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office said Gertrudis A. Reyes, 21, brought tobacco to an inmate while working as a civilian detention officer.

Reyes was charged last week with the felony of prohibited item in a correctional facility."

Before being arrested and charged, Reyes had resigned from his job while under investigation by the HCSO Office of Inspector General.

Reyes was hired in March 2013.

Reyes was booked into the same jail system in which he had been employed. He was released on $5,000 bail.
