Deputies: Teen brother shoots sister, 16, in the leg

Officials say a relative of the girl called the police after she was shot in the leg

HOUSTON – According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, a teenage girl was shot Tuesday afternoon in the middle of the street.

It happened shortly before 4 p.m. Tuesday at 1100 Ruellen and Silver Oak in northwest Harris County.

Officials said a relative of the 16-year-old girl called police after she was shot in the leg.

Harris County EMS responded to the scene.

According to police, the teen was rushed to the hospital in stable condition.

Police said the victim's 17-year-old brother brought a gun home. He and his sister were playing with the gun when it fired.

According to officials, the boy initially tried to hide the gun, but showed investigators the .45 caliber handgun that he got somewhere between the school bus and home.

According to police, the boy told them the gun came from a family member.

Police said the boy called the shooting in as a drive-by. However, since that was not the case, he will face a charge for filing a false police report. Additional charges will be left to the district attorney's office.
