Deputies: Man shoots, kills girlfriend

HOUSTON – Authorities are looking for a woman's boyfriend after she was shot and killed Saturday evening, the Harris County Sheriff's Office says.

The 31-year-old's boyfriend is known only at this point as Melvin.

Investigators said Covarrubias and the boyfriend were visiting someone at an apartment in the 14100 block of Cornerstone Village near Walters in Northwest Harris County.

Deputies said Covarrubias and her boyfriend were sitting on the couch, and at some point the boyfriend pulled out a gun and shot her.

She died immediately from her injuries.

Socora Thompson, who lives downstairs, said she wasn't aware anything happened until police showed up.

"We heard something like a gunshot, but it sounded like a little firecracker," said Thompson. "So we didn't pay attention to it. We didn't hear any screams, any crying, nothing."

Another neighbor, who asked not to be identified, said he heard the shot, but didn't investigate.

"I heard it, but it's nothing you don't hear a couple of times a week," he said. "You hear gunshots, but think it's just kind of normal around here. So you just protect your own home. Take measures to protect your own home. If it's not coming your way, don't go outside, because you don't know what's going on out there."

Deputies said the boyfriend ran from the scene before they arrived. Deputies said they don't have a motive for the killing.
