HARRIS COUNTY, Texas - A homeowner opened fire on an alleged intruder in northwest Harris County.
The shooting happened shortly before 10 a.m. Tuesday in the 2300 block of Hyland Park near Silver Glen Estates. Homeowner Quinton Wood said he was sleeping when he heard the doorbell ring several times.
"Then I heard a strong knock and I knew something was going on," Wood said.
He grabbed his gun and called 911. During that time the suspect broke the hinges to his front door and got inside. At first Wood didn't know where the suspect went.
"It was quiet, but I heard something and I knew he was in my house," Wood said.
A few seconds later Wood came face to face with the suspect.
"I asked him why he's doing this and he said 'I'm a thief, I'm a thief'," Wood said.
Wood said after that the suspect kept coming toward him and he had no other choice but to shoot him.
"I kept telling him to stop and get down," Wood said. "Then everything went bad."
According to deputies on scene, the suspect was shot in the chest. He was airlifted to a hospital, but deputies said he is expected to survive.
For Wood, the incident brought back bad memories. He said a burglar also broke into his home about four years ago.
That burglar stole electronics and was eventually caught. But Woods said he also stole his peace of mind.
"Four years go by and I thought I was getting my peace of mind back," Wood said. "Then today happens."
Wood, who is on medical leave from his job with the postal service, was not injured during the incident. However, he did have to miss a physical therapy appointment.
