Investigators were tipped off by a firefighter who noticed the sickly horses at a home off FM 2854 located just west of Conroe.

The owner, Varrick Johnson, told investigators that he is unemployed and could not afford to care for the animals.

Deputies say the horse that was seized was more than 100 pounds underweight.

A hearing is now scheduled to turn the horses over the SPCA.
