DEER PARK, Texas – A Deer Park woman is in trouble with the law after police say she allowed her 3-year-old grandson to wander out of the house and remain unsupervised near a busy street.
Becky Jackson, 48, is charged with felony endangering a child. The incident happened in the 4600 block of Luella on June 9. Neighbors called 9-1-1 to report they saw a child playing alone on the edge of a street. When a police officer arrived, the child was still outside and alone.
The officer says he picked up the boy and tried to get the attention of an adult inside Jackson's home. According to court documents, the officer knocked on the door several times and eventually went inside where he found Jackson asleep.
Jackson responded by jumping out of bed and expressing frustration that her grandson got out of the house again, according to court records.
On Friday, Jackson defended herself and said she is a good caretaker for her grandson, Noah.
She says she has put childproof locks on the doors on her home, but Noah managed to get outside.
"He slipped out of bed while we were taking a nap and he got out, that's it," said Jackson. "They're sending me to court making it sound like I said hey Noah, run around. Leave the front door open. That's how they're treating me."
Jackson says she may not be allowed to care for any of her grandchildren until the court case is resolved.
Her bail has been set at $2,000.
