HOUSTON -

A homeowner has decided to arm himself with a baseball bat on his daily walk after a pair of dogs broke through his neighbor's fence and killed their dog.

The incident happened Sunday morning in the Meadows of Northwest Place subdivision near 249 and Beltway 8.

The small dog's death was witnessed by several people including two children.

"They broke through the fence. I am worried," Laura Manzanares said.

Manzanares and her family were inside their home when they heard the commotion outside. She pulled out her phone and recorded video of the dogs roaming around her backyard.

According to the woman, moments later the two larger dogs attacked and killed their mixed breed small dog.

"They had to look at the dog being mutilated right in their own backyard," Michael Broussard, HOA President, said.

Broussard acted quickly to identify the larger dogs' owner and report the incident to a deputy constable who is investigating the matter.

"This will be taken care of, the dogs have tasted blood, next time it could be a kid," Broussard said.

Broussard said the two loose dogs were both Shar Peis or mixed Shar Peis.

Monday, the loose dogs' owner told Local 2 she was sorry and planned to surrender the dogs to Harris County Animal Control, although it was unclear when that would happen.

In the meantime, several homeowners said they would keep a watchful eye on any loose dogs in the neighborhood and one woman reported her next door neighbor now arms himself with a baseball bat when walking his dog.
