Wrong-way driver kills one in fiery crash on Highway 225, police say

Both vehicles burst into flames after collision

HOUSTON – One person was killed Friday morning after being hit head-on by a wrong-way driver on Highway 225, according to the Houston Police Department.

Police got a call just before 3 a.m. from a witness who reported seeing a Ford F-150 pickup truck speeding in the wrong direction on the La Porte Freeway east before it hit a Kia Optima.

Police said both vehicles burst into flames when they collided. The Kia then flipped over the guardrail, according to investigators.

The male driver of the Kia died at the scene. His identity has not been released.

Bystanders helped pull the driver from the burning truck. He was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to survive.

Police said the driver of the truck is being evaluated for alcohol, and investigators are awaiting results of a mandatory blood draw.

No charges have been filed.

The freeway at Allen Genoa reopened just before 8 a.m.
