Deadly apartment fire under investigation in Prairie View

According to police, firefighters were called to a 12 unit apartment complex on the 2000 block of Dooley around 6 p.m. Monday.

"Someone threw a Molotov cocktail through the window apparently," said Prairie View Police Chief Larry Johnson. "So we don't know which came first."

Investigators said they don't know if the fire bomb that destroyed the apartment came first or the bullet that killed 27-year-old Jeff McDonald.

"We believe that someone shot through the door and he was struck inside the apartment," Johnson said.

Police said four friends staying with McDonald tried rushing him to safety but it was too late.

"It's just a shame," said Jeff's friend Valencia Obi. "I'm still in shock. I really don't believe it. I just saw him on Saturday."

Family members say Jeff was from Dallas but moved to Prairie View to go to college at Prairie View A&M.  However, friends said McDonald was no longer enrolled in school.

"Jeff was a nice guy," Obi said. "He was always nice to me, never disrespectful. He had manners and that was something I always remembered about him."

There were no other reported injuries.

Police said they don't yet have a possible motive or any potential suspects.  Anyone with information is asked to call the Prairie View Police Department or Crime Stoppers.
