Dark skies in Galveston don't damper Memorial Day

GALVESTON, Texas – The clouds mean less crowds on this Memorial Day in Galveston. After a weekend packed with people, a lot of tourists started to head home late Sunday and early Monday.

"People is leaving since yesterday," said Norbey Orrego, who came to the island with his family for the three-day weekend. "We're going to stay until tonight because we have work and school tomorrow."

Some folks who spoke to Local 2 said they preferred the overcast skies. For them it means comfortably enjoying lunch outside, plenty of places in the sand to sit and parking is plentiful, too.

"It could be a lot more crowded," said Katelyn Grychka. "I know I've seen it a lot more crowded before."

"I don't like it hot," said one woman who was having lunch outdoors. "This is good weather."

It's estimated that as many as 500,000 people visited Galveston over the weekend, according to the Convention and Visitors Bureau. Even though the weather kept a few people away, bureau leaders still considered the holiday weekend a huge success.
