Daily Craig: Don't leap just yet

For those born Feb. 29 it turns out you are way younger than someone born Feb 28th even if you were born the  same year. Other startling facts on this Monday include my thoughts on why sports are called what they are called. It seems to make perfect sense when ONE THINKS OF BASEBALL.  There is a ball in use and there are bases. Basketball is the other easy one. There is a basket and there is a ball. It gets tricky for some with HOCKEY and SOCCER.

We in the states are about the only ones in the world (except Canada) calling THE BEAUTIFUL GAME  soccer. It is a word hardly anyone knows where it came from and I am not going to do it either. It makes far more sense to call it FOOTBALL as the rest of the world (except Canada) does. IT requires a ball and plenty of feet. The American game rarely has the foot come into  play unless you are thrilled with punts and field goal attempts. Here and now i would like us to call our game AMERICANBALL. i CAN SEE THE NF-HELL executives scrambling to change the logo to the NA-HELL.  Even those in Canada can't remember why HOCKEY isn't called ICEPUCK or ICESTICK or ICEFIGHT. Boxing sounds more like a Fed Ex thing. Racing is solid but you should know ahead of time if it is Dog, Horse, Indy, or Nascar.

Another item that seems odd is the word RESERVATION.  To prove my point I concluded I had RESERVATIONS for the big dinner, but had RESERVATIONS about how good it might be. They employ Native Americans who left the Reservation so they wouldn't have reservations about making reservations at the same place as me. I gotta see if the Oscars are over yet.  I usually have serious reservations about how they decide who gets the reservations for the after  parties.
