Cub Scout counselor accused of videotaping kids at camp

HOUSTON – A 24-year-old Cub Scout counselor is in police custody and has confessed to videotaping children as well as staff members with a hidden camera near Austin.

It happened at Camp Tom Wooten on Lake Bastrop. The Bastrop County Sheriff's Department says Cory Cason placed a small Go Pro camera hidden in some mulch near the outdoor shower area at the camp.

Investigators say Cason told them he then set out to videotape two staff members in the shower and also admitted he convinced two children to shower there as well, close to the camera.

"I did ask him if there were any other children and if he had ever touched anybody and he said he had not." said Banner-Vance Weltner, with the Bastrop County Sheriff's Office.

Camp authorities found out about the situation when one of the children being photographed spotted the camera and reported it.

The Boy Scouts of America says it immediately fired Cason, contacted investigators and have banned Cason from ever being part of the Scouts again.

Scout leaders say they have also put Cason's name into a nationwide database of banned adult leaders.
