Wife surrenders after holding husband hostage in La Marque

LA MARQUE, Texas – Police say the standoff involving a wife and her husband in La Marque is now over.

A man walked out of the house off Hawthorne and Highway 3 just after 4 p.m. Wednesday, followed by his wife. Police said both are in their 70s.

La Marque police were first called to the scene just before 10 a.m. A caller told them his brother-in-law was being held against his will inside the home.

Police were also told that the woman had threatened to kill her husband before, and there were firearms in the house.

"I'm not going to release specifics about the firearms, but it did draw some alarm. That's why you see all the personnel that's out here," said Sgt. Shawn Spruill with the La Marque Police Department.

Police said earlier in the day, they were able to make phone contact with the woman. They called negotiators from Texas City for assistance after the call was disconnected.

The woman has been taken into custody and will be taken for mental evaluation. Her husband will undergo a welfare check.  Investigators are consulting the Galveston County District Attorney's office about possible charges.

According to investigators, the dispute may have resulted from a financial disagreement between the couple.
