HPD: Man gets away after officer-involved shooting

Houston police say two men were stealing tires from a vehicle in an apartment complex parking lot in the 7300 block of Ardmore early Thursday morning.

Police say an officer pulled up to the vehicle, which was on blocks with the tires removed, and told the men to show their hands. They ignored commands, police say.

Officials say the men then ran to their vehicle and tried to drive off in the direction towards the officer.

Houston police say the officer was in fear for his life and fired his weapon. The suspect vehicle lost control near the intersection of Dixie and Almeda after the shots were fired.

The two suspects fled on foot. Police say officers arrested one man, but the other got away.

They believe the man who ran off was wounded due to the amount of blood left in the vehicle. That suspect remains at large.

The suspect arrested has been identified as Tearral Cornilus Field. The 49-year-old is charged with evading arrest and theft.

Officer J. Martinez. who discharged his duty weapon, was not injured in the incident.  Officer Martinez, who was sworn in as an officer in December, 2001, is assigned to the South Central Patrol Division.

An investigation will be launched, as is customary, by HPD and the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
