Crews work to fix street after water main leak

Leak flooded street with thousands of gallons of water

HOUSTON – Construction crews worked around the clock after a water main leak caused thousands of gallons of water to spill into an east Houston street.

Heavy construction vehicles, such as front loaders, are being used to dig up the line on Navigation at Macario Garcia after a 30-inch main broke Wednesday between 8:30 and 9 a.m.

Crews made their way down onto the pipe as they worked to replace it. The intersection was blocked off when the water kept rising from the broken main. Thousands of gallons of water spewed into the street, flooding the intersection.

The owner of Super Chicken and Rice closed up shop when he smelled gas in the water from a nearby gas station.

The street in front of Fire Station 20 was also flooded but did not stop firefighters from responding.

Officials said a contractor may be to blame.
