Couple escapes house fire in League City

Mini explosions shake homes in Galveston County neighborhood

LEAGUE CITY – Investigators from the League City Fire Marshal's Office are looking into the cause of a house fire.

Firefighters rushed to a two story home off the 100 block of Rustic Oak Drive near Bay Area Boulevard.

When firefighters arrived, the garage was consumed by smoke and fire.

"Well, I heard boom, boom, boom," said neighbor David Tepera. "At first I thought it was fireworks, because of the holiday but then I realized it wasn't. The blasts kept coming," said Tepera.

According to the homeowner, she woke up around 5:45 a.m. to loud popping noises. She was able to get out the backdoor with her husband, but when they ran around to the front of the home, flames were shooting into the sky.

The mini explosions shook homes on the street and the impact reached several blocks away in the Rustic Oaks subdivision. Neighbors came rushing out trying to help.

"I knew there was something wrong after the fourth blast," said Mark McClure, who lives three homes down from the fire. "Of course, I immediately associated the bangs with fireworks, but it wasn't fireworks because there were no bright lights in the sky, but you could see a glow around the trees."

The fire spread to the attic of the home. According to the Deputy Fire Marshal, investigators are still trying to pinpoint the origin of the fire. The couple had ammo in their garage, but the ammo was not affected by the heat.

The couple's children were not at home when the fire started.
