Couple ambushed, robbed in driveway

HOUSTON – A group of masked men attacked a couple in the driveway of their northwest Houston home, officials said.

"Our driveway is very well lit," said Sandra Libby, who was robbed along with her husband. "You would of thought the light would of discouraged them, but didn't seem to bother them one bit."

The couple had just returned home in the 7700 block of Maple Tree about 11 p.m. on Tuesday after watching a play when they were approached by the unwelcome visitors.

"They were all wearing bandanas over their faces," said Libby. "Some had hoodies on, one had a wool, skull cap."

Libby said that as they got out of the car, three or four men, one of them with a gun, ran up to the car and demanded her purse.

Libby said she screamed as they pushed her down, tearing her pants and scuffing her knee. Her husband said he used his umbrella to knock the gun out of the man's hand and hit him repeatedly.

They said the men then ran off with the purse. They said they called police, who arrived and found a BB gun clip in the driveway.

Although Libby said she lost almost everything, she's glad they didn't lose their lives.

"I guess now we have to start watching our driveway when you come in and out of the house," said Libby.

Neighbors said there have been a rash of burglaries in the area lately. Police said they're trying to figure out if they've been committed by the same suspects.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
