A Liberty County judge and his wife are recovering in the hospital after surviving an early-morning head-on collision around 12:15 a.m. Saturday, just north of Highway 90 on CR 603 in Liberty County.
Investigators told Local 2 Judge Craig McNair and his wife Lisa were flown to Memorial Hermann Hospital after 17-year-old German Mata hit their car head on.
Deputies said at the time of the accident Mata was driving with flashing "red and blue" lights on his SUV.
Investigators said when they arrived the teenager was nowhere to be found. Instead, deputies said, they found the teen's brother, 21-year-old Edgar Mata, at the scene of the crash. According to deputies, the 21-year-old told investigators he was the driver of SUV at the time of the crash.
Deputies said they then went to Mata's house, where they found the teenager arrested the brothers.
Investigators said they charged German Mata with failure to stop and render aide, improper use of red and blue lights and no Texas driver's license. Deputies sai they charged his brother Edgar Mata with making a false report to a peace officer and public intoxication.
Deputies have not said why German Mata had flashing lights on his SUV.
Judge McNair and his wife are expected to recover.
