Sugar Land man shot to death in northeast Houston
Detectives believe group of robbers watched owner, followed him from bank back to store
A convenience store owner from Sugar Land was shot to death while police say he was driving back from the bank.
Homicide detectives said Farooq Khanani, 54, died just few hundred feet away from his own supermarket, the victim of armed robbers.
Investigators said Khanani went to his bank on the southwest side of Houston just before noon Thursday to withdraw several thousand dollars for his store.
Detectives believe a group of robbers may have been watching the owner the entire time, following him from the bank back to his store to ambush him.
"He pulled in the parking lot and probably sensed that something wasn't quite right," said Sgt. Steven Murdock. "Tried to turn around and leave and he was shot at numerous times."
Investigators said the injured owner still tried to drive away from his store, but only made it across the street.
Khanani lost control of his SUV and drove into a ditch, where authorities said he died from the gunshot wounds.
Investigators said the robbers may have been driving a dark-colored or black older model four-door sedan, possibly a Chrysler 300, with tinted windows. Officials are looking at surveillance video for any leads in this case.
