Controversy over California school's prom contract

HOUSTON – A California teen is fighting back against her school's prom contract that includes specific rules for attire. Although dress codes are nothing new for dances, she believes it's unfairly targeting girls after she was nearly kicked out last year.

Before buying tickets, students at Ceres High School must sign a contract saying they must leave the dance if they are dressed inappropriately.

The guidelines say dresses must not be low-cut, expose the midriff or have a high slit as well as rules on sorts and denim. District officials say the restrictions apply to both male and female students.

Nada Abdo, a senior, says it's difficult for girls to find any dress that fits the code, especially since she is plus-sized. Last year, she says school officials found her sheer-backed dress to be too revealing and told her to cover up.

The school district says no other students have complained about the prom contract and Abdo is welcome to appeal the rules.
