A heartbreaking case in Conroe where a 1-year-old child has died and his father is accused of causing his death.
There are still a lot of questions about the father's alleged role in this terrible tragedy. Investigators say the father called 911 to report his child was not breathing. That child later died and now police are trying to figure out what happened inside that apartment.
Royce Johnson lives at the Stone Ridge apartments in Conroe. Earlier this week he noticed something was out of place.
"There were a bunch of first responder vehicles and just all lit up and at first I didn't know what was going on," Johnson said.
It turns out that was the scene where 22-year-old Willie Jackson reported his son was not breathing. Paramedics showed up to the complex right off of I-45 and rushed the little boy to the hospital, but he did not survive.
"According to statements obtained at the scene, that the doctors reported that the child suffered some serious bodily injury as a result of what they believe to be shaken baby syndrome," said Montgomery County District Attorney Warren Diepraam.
Jackson was home alone at the time. Police say the mother of the baby lives in Dallas. As for the neighbors who live here, those who saw the father with his son in the past say it's hard to believe what happened.
"That's a child, you know. He took a little baby's life," said Johnson.
Jackson faces a charge of injury to a child. Prosecutors say that carries a sentence of five years to life behind bars.
Jackson was booked into the Montgomery County Jail on a $200,000 bond.
