Condoms, massage oil debated at Galveston Commissioners Court

The county voted to trash the items in its possession

GALVESTON, Texas – The Galveston County Commissioners Court voted Tuesday to throw away several unopened items in the county's possession.

Such a vote might not normally get a lot of attention, but this one is because of the nature of some of the items.

The odd mix of items includes a box of condoms, massage oil, mouthpieces for Breathalyzers, a dog collar and a bottle of Crown Royal whiskey.

The items are currently in the county's possession for various reasons. The condoms and massage oil was used in a trial, in which a man was found not guilty of operating a sexually oriented business without a permit. The dog collar was from an animal cruelty case.

Rufus Crowder, purchasing agent for Galveston County, oversees the buying and selling of county property. He recommended that the county destroy the unused items mentioned and recommended that the county sell other items, such as old chairs and computers.

The recommendations were the topic of debate during Tuesday's commissioners court meeting. Some commissioners questioned why some items should be destroyed and why others should be sold.

Crowder told the court tha they were only his recommendations and it was up to the commissioners to decide what to do with the items.

The court voted to trash the items.
