HOUSTON – Houston police are looking into a burglary that happened at a Montrose-area day care center.
The incident happened at the Avalon Academy Day Care in the 1600 block of Indiana Street over the Labor Day weekend. The day care director stopped by one of those days to drop something off and made the discovery.
Houston police said it appears the crooks used a child-sized chair to boost themselves up. They were able to get in through a window, officials said.
"They got all of our computers, some laptops and cameras," said Connie McGrew, the academy's director. "I didn't know if I wanted to scream or cry because we're a nonprofit organization and everything we have is donated to us."
McGrew said the thieves stole five computers and were selective in which ones they took. In the children's library, they stole a new computer but left the older one. They also busted down the door to the office and unhooked a computer from McGrew's desk.
McGrew said the burglars were careful not to leave any fingerprints behind. She said she thinks the thieves wore a pair of rubber gloves usually intended for staff members who change diapers but they found the box of gloves on the floor.
Workers at Avalon Academy are hoping police catch the burglars, but HPD officials said they have no leads at this time.
"Now we're starting all over again. We're asking for donations and are trying to get everything back together," McGrew said.
