Reporter: BILL, RIGHT NOW, HER SON IS IN THE HOSPITAL BUT SHE SAYS HE SHOULD BE OKAY. THAT'S AFTER POLICE SAY THE TWO WOULD-BE ROBBERS SHOT HIM IN THE LEG RIGHT OUTSIDE HIS STORE. IN THIS DAY AND TIME, YOU'RE OKAY IF THAT'S ALL THAT HAPPENED. Reporter: HER SON OWNS MR. INDIAN HAIR. TWO MEN CAME BARGING INTO THE STORE. THEY SAID THAT THEY CAME IN WITH BANDANNAS ACROSS THEIR FACE AND IMMEDIATELY STARTED USING PROFANITY, TELLING HIM TO GET DOWN. Reporter: HER SON WAS IN THE BACK ROOM, THEN THE GUY STARTED TELLING HIS SISTER AND THE FAMILY FRIEND TO ALSO GET IN BACK. SO HE THOUGHT THAT THEY WERE ATTACKING HIS SISTER, SO THAT'S WHEN HE CAME OUT. Reporter: THAT'S WHEN POLICE SAY THE GUYS RAN OUT OF THE STORE SHOOTING AT THE OWNER. HE TOOK A BULLET TO HIS LEG AND AT FIRST HE DIDN'T EVEN KNOW IT. I JUST HEARD A LOUD GUNSHOT, AND THEN I SAW KEELING, THAT HE HAD BEEN SHOT. HE SAID, NO, I HAVEN'T BEEN SHOT. I SAID, YOU'VE BEEN SHOT. THAT'S BLOOD. Reporter: UNFORTUNATELY, THIS ISN'T THE FIRST TIME THIEVES HAVE HIT THIS STORE. Reporter: AND TONIGHT, SHE HAS A MESSAGE FOR THE GUYS INVOLVED IN THIS LATEST INCIDENT. THE GUYS WHO COULD HAVE KILLED HER SON. I JUST PRAY TO GOD THAT THEY HAVE SOME SENSITIVITY AND MAYBE DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT. Reporter: AND YOU CAN SEE POLICE HAVE CLEARED THE SCENE NOW. THE SHOP IS CLOSED FOR THE DAY. AS FOR THE SUSPECTS, THEY GOT AWAY IN A GREEN FORD PICKUP. OFFICERS SAY THAT PICKUP HAS SINCE BEEN LOCATED, BUT THE GUYS WERE NOT INSIDE. WE'RE LIVE FROM THE MUSEUM DISTRICT, SAMANTHA PTASHKIN, KPRC LOCAL 2. POLICE ARE NOW CHECKING TO SEE IF TODAY'S ROBBERY IS

HOUSTON -

A hair shop owner is in the hospital after he was shot during an attempted robbery near downtown.

Police say it happened at around 2 p.m. Friday at Mr. Indian Hair in the 4800 block of Almeda Road. Two men allegedly barged into the store wearing bandanas and demanded hair.

"They said they came in with bandanas across their face and immediately started using profanity, telling them to get down," said Daaiyah Farooq, whose son owns the store.

She says her son, daughter and a family friend were all inside at the time. The son was in a back room when Farooq says the men started telling her daughter and the family friend to also get in back.

"So he thought they were attacking his sister, so that's when he came out," Farooq said about her son.

At some point one of the men shot the owner in the leg before both got away in a green Ford pickup. Police say they located the pickup, but the men were not inside.

The owner is in the hospital, but is expected to be OK.

"This is a serious problem we see happening all over the city," Farooq said.

Over the past week there have been a total of six hair store robberies, including this one.

It's not the first time that Mr. Indian Hair has been hit. Back in October 2013, four women were accused of stealing expensive weaves from the store.

Kehlin Farooq says two men stormed his shop on Almeda Road looking for cash he didn't have. They held a gun to his sister's head and when he went after them the robbers shot him in the leg.

On Monday, community activist Quanell X, along with the African-American Islamic Society, joined Farooq with a warning for anyone targeting hair shops in the future.

"What we're saying is we will be prepared for whatever comes at us," Farooq said.

"Proper technical equipment will be waiting for you," said Quanell X.

Local 2 asked if the direct threat of violence against possible criminals was a response to a perceived lack of help from Houston police and Quanell X said that wasn't the case. He just feels HPD doesn't have the resources to be everywhere all the time, so in this case members of the community would step in.
