HEARNE, Texas – Protesters are demanding justice in the wake of an officer-involved shooting that left a 93-year-old Hearne woman dead.
Members of the New Black Panther Party marched through the streets of Hearne, two days after Perlie Golden was shot and killed at her home by a Hearne police officer.
Police say officer Stephen Stem was responding to a disturbance call involving a woman with a gun, when he shot Golden multiple times after she allegedly threatened a relative with a revolver.
Hearne Mayor Reuben Gomez addressed a large crowd at a vigil for Golden Wednesday night and said the city council would meet in a special session on Saturday to talk about Stem's future with the Hearne Police Department.
The Robertson County District Attorney confirms officer Stem was involved in a shooting that left a man dead in 2012.
Mayor Gomez will reportedly recommend Stem be fired.
"The incident is on the agenda and action will be taken. I just want to assure the public that we are as concerned as everyone here today," Gomez said.
Friends often referred to Golden as Ms. Sulie.
Vigil organizers say they are praying not only for peace but for patience as the investigation into why the shooting occurred moves forward.
Texas Rangers are handling the investigation.
Officer Stem remains on paid administrative leave which is standard protocol in these types of cases.
