HOUSTON -

Employees at a northeast Houston Citgo store spent the morning cleaning up after a smash-and-grab.

It happened just after 4 a.m. Wednesday at the store on the Eastex Freeway and Collingsworth.

The clerk on duty at the time, Syed Shah, said he was in the security booth when the pickup slammed into the store two times.

The pickup damaged the area where Shah was standing so badly, he was trapped by the rubble.

"It was so horrible, and it has not happened before like this, and they damaged the building badly," Shah said.

He said the four robbers tried to take the ATM, but ran off when they could not get it into the truck.

Rescue crews freed Shah from the booth. He was not hurt.

The store's owner was trying to assess the damage to determine if he will be able to reopen later in the day. The gas station plans to add concrete posts in front of the door to prevent this from happening again.
