HOUSTON -

Crews from various city departments will be on standby to ensure safety during the extreme winter weather in  the Houston area.

According to the City of Houston, residents should take precautions while traveling on icy roads. Drivers are advised to drive at low speeds and use long-following distances. Click here for other driving tips.

Once ice is reported on the ground, crews from Public Works will begin spreading "chat rock" on roads.

Houston residents are urged to call 311 to report any ice on city roads.

The Houston Airport System has reported that many airlines have delayed or canceled flights in preparation for the storm. Residents with questions about flight delays can visit their website.
