Child drowns in apartment pool

Houston police respond to third drowning this week

HOUSTON – Investigators say a 3-year-old boy climbed a fence to a pool Sunday afternoon at Westheimer Terrace Apartments and was later found at the bottom of the pool.

"There were a lot of people out there trying to help," said a witness.

Investigators said residents performed CPR until paramedics arrived.

"We heard a lot of screaming. We came out and saw that he was on the ground," said a witness.

This was the third drowning to happen in the Houston area this week. Last Sunday night, a 5-year-old boy slipped and fell in the pool at an apartment complex off of Fondren.

On Friday night, a 5-year-old boy in Fort Bend County was in the shallow end of a pool, but was later found in the deep end.

To prevent these tragedies, investigators said parents need to keep a close eye on their children.

"Be vigilant with your children and stay with them the whole time," said Zugner.

Police said no charges are expected at this time.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, everyday about 10 people die from unintentional drowning in the United States. Of these, two are children under the age of 14.
