Ceremonies honor 181st anniversary of Battle of Alamo

Events to take place downtown on Monday

SAN ANTONIO – The 181st anniversary of the fall of the Alamo is March 6 and to remember that history the San Antonio Living History Association held a free show Monday morning.

The show took place at 6 a.m. at Alamo Plaza and was a commemorative ceremony honoring the fallen for their sacrifices in the 1836 battle.

Readings from eyewitness accounts described the pre-dawn attack and was followed by the lighting of 13 candles in remembrance of the 13-day siege. The ceremony concluded with a prayer along with the laying of a floral wreath.

The Alamo Mission Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas will host their annual "Memorial Service in honor of Alamo Heroes Day" at 2:30 p.m.

The service has taken place every year since 1936. The ceremony begins with 13 rings from a historic bell, symbolizing the siege. Flags representing the wealth of nations and states from which the Alamo defenders hailed will be presented by airmen from Lackland Air Force Base.

Also taking place at the Alamo visitors can now visit a new interactive exhibit entitled, "Jim Bowie: Man, knife, Legend" that has opened in the newly refurbished Alamo annex. The exhibit chronicles the history of Bowie and his legendary knife.

The exhibit uses new digital technology that has never been used in Texas before. Visitors will have an interactive experience with video touch screens.
