Caught on camera: School bus uses unsafe bridge

Yale Street Bridge deemed unsafe for large vehicles, including some pickup trucks

HOUSTON – A decaying bridge in The Heights has been deemed unsafe, but school buses full of kids have been spotted using it.

KPRC Local 2 obtained amateur video of a yellow school bus driving over the Yale Street Bridge.

The video was recorded by a member of a community organization group called Responsible Urban Development for Houston during morning rush hour on Oct. 11.

Members concerned about the bridge's safety wanted to see how bad the violations were.

"It's a story that school buses are crossing it, but the bigger story is that the city won't close it," said Jeffery Jackson.

According to Houston police, officers are supposed to be on the lookout for violators, but the force does not have the resources to enforce the new regulations around the clock.

On Wednesday, Houston City Council Member C.O. Bradford urged the city to do more to make sure the Yale Street Bridge is safe.

"Public Works has indicated the bridge is not safe for certain pickup trucks and SUV's," he said. "None of those are being stopped by the officers."

Local 2 called the private bus company seen traveling over the bridge for a comment, but that call has not been returned.
