Catholics celebrate Ash Wednesday all across the country

HOUSTON – Catholics across the country are celebrating Ash Wednesday.

The practice comes from the ancient Jewish tradition of Penance and fasting. A ceremony was held Wednesday at Our Lady of Guadaloupe in Houston's East End.

Ash Qednesday is one of the most popular and important holy days and takes place  46 days before easter Sunday.

The practice includes the wearing of ashes on the head.

The ashes symbolize the dust from which God made us.
