Car runs over 2 men, 1 killed

Suspect in custody

HOUSTON – An investigation is underway after police say two men were intentionally run over in west Houston.

One died and the other was taken to a hospital with an injured leg, according to police.

The incident happened around 2 a.m. Sunday at Bellflower Road and Amanda Road.

Houston police initially reported that the two men who were hit were Good Samaritans who came to the aid of another man who was being robbed. Police later said it was unclear if any Good Samaritans were involved.

Investigators are reviewing surveillance video in hopes of determining exactly what happened in the moments leading up to the incident.

In one video viewed by Local 2's crew, surveillance video showed three men attacking a white SUV with what appear to be bats and beer bottles before the SUV driver backed up and drove toward one of them, hitting a fence and hitting the man.

Despite being hit, that man was able to run away before the driver backed up and drove toward another man. The men were then seen running out of frame.

"When I saw it, he was definitely trying to get him with the car. Two of the kids ran on Amanda," said witness Chester Bates. "That's when he jumped the curb, and that's when I thought he pinned the guy on the fence, but then the kid got up and started running again."

Police said the driver of the SUV left the scene of the accident but they were able to follow a fluid trail leaking from his car. They found the car a few blocks away and took him into custody.

That man had not yet been identified.

Police interviewed a man who said he was robbed at that same intersection Sunday morning. That man told Local 2 he was robbed by three men who approached him as he walked toward his car on Bellflower. The man said the three men beat him up, and took his cellphone and wallet. He said there were no Good Samaritans that came to his aid and he was unaware of the accident that followed because he was left unconscious by the attack.
