HOUSTON -

Two people are in the hospital after a major crash in southwest Houston.

It happened around 2:20 a.m. Thursday on Westheimer and Westheimer Parkway.

Investigators said the driver of a Toyota car lost control for unknown reasons, hit a curb, knocked down a fire hydrant and went into a parking lot.

The car slammed into a shopping center sign, which caused it to split in half.

Officials said the man driving the car was taken to the hospital in stable condition. A female passenger was transported to the hospital in critical condition.

Police are testing the driver to see if he was impaired in any way.
