California sea lion to join Aquarium Pyramid at Moody Gardens

Moody Gardens welcomes latest addition to North Pacific Exhibit

GALVESTON, Texas – Sam, a California sea lion, is settling into his new home at the Aquarium Pyramid, Moody Gardens has announced.

Moody Gardens said it is welcoming its latest addition to the North Pacific Exhibit. Introductions began this week in the exhibit between the seals and sea lions, as it will take time for Sam to get acclimated to his new environment.

Sea lions Dino and Squirt and harbor seal Porter were said to be intrigued with their new friend. Moody Gardens said biologists will be monitoring them closely to see how their chemistry builds.

"Getting Sam was a great opportunity to add to the North Pacific Exhibit," said Diane Olsen, assistant curator of Seals and Penguins.

Moody Gardens said staff is excited about the new opportunity with the Utica Zoo.

"Utica Zoo was expecting a new pup and needed to move Sam, and we were able to help by providing him a home," Olsen said.

Sam is the son of the Audubon Zoo's former sea lion, Porter. Moody Gardens said Porter was one of five sea lions to temporarily reside at Moody Gardens after Hurricane Katrina.

Guests can see Sam in his new habitat at the Aquarium Pyramid, but also on the live seal cam here, Moody Gardens said.
