Calf killed in crash, 3 injured in 2-vehicle pileup

HOUSTON – A deadly crash involving a calf Friday set off another wreck that injured several people on the Eastex Freeway.

A wrecker driver witnessed the cow being killed in a hit-and-run in the north lanes of the freeway, police said. As the tow truck driver was stopped along the road with his emergency lights on, the driver of a pickup truck slammed into the back of the tow truck, according to investigators.

The two people inside the pickup became trapped and had to be cut from the vehicle, police said.

The tow truck driver and the occupants of the pickup were taken to a hospital. Their conditions were not immediately known.

It is unclear how the calf got on the road or where it came from.
