Burglars target Mission Bend homes

HOUSTON – There has been a rash of home burglaries in the Mission Bend area.

The crimes are happening during the day and, in some cases, despite alarm systems.

"The alarm was going off and I'm looking at my neighbors house -- I know he's not home," said Tramain Johnson

Tuesday afternoon, Johnson pulled in the driveway and came face to face with a burglar.

"It was a tall guy. He got into a Cadillac CTS and just sped off," said Johnson.

An hour earlier, another house was broken into just a block away.

Local 2 ran a crime report for Mission Bend and found six burglaries from Aug. 7 through Aug. 14.

Harris County sheriff's deputies patrol the area. But the civic club president believes the crooks are watching residents.

"They are watching people when they leave, when the deputies leave the area, making an opportunity when no one is around," said Bob Leitner, Mission Bend Civic Club president.

Leitner said Monday's community meeting was packed with concerned residents. He said many are doing the right thing by activating the home alarm.  But he's also encouraging residents to watch out for each other and suspicious activity.

"If they are going to come here, we're going to catch them," said Leitner.

Anyone with information about the break-ins is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
