Burglars on bicycles break into apartment, steal car

HPD hopes someone recognizes them from surveillance video

HOUSTON – Two burglars on bicycles broke into a Westchase area apartment and stole a car, that's according to Houston police.

The suspects appear to be in their teens.

Surveillance cameras at the entrance of an apartment complex in the 2700 block of Woodland Park Drive off Westheimer, recorded images of them coming and leaving. But they left in a stolen car.

They're accused of getting the keys to that car from inside an apartment they also broke into.

"We both had a little bit of a bad feeling," said Karen Herrera.  "They saw us walk out the front door."

Herrera and her boyfriend, James Slaton, were on their way to the gym when they saw the teens hanging around outside.

Thirty minutes later when they returned they discovered their apartment had been broken into.

"We came in an saw the patio doors open," Herrera said. "They had gone into our room and taken my box of jewelry and two Macbooks and an iPad."

Slaton was able to track the stolen iPad through an app on his phone. It was showing up about a mile and a half away, so they went to check it out.

When they arrived they found Herrera's car and the two burglars inside.

"While I was on the phone with 911 they slowly got out of the car and ran off," Herrera said.

The Houston police showed up but the teens were already gone and they haven't been seen since. Investigators are hoping someone will recognize them from the surveillance video and turn them in.
