HOUSTON -

People living in an upscale neighborhood in West Houston are on alert tonight after a rash of recent burglaries.

Since last month, at least five homes have been burglarized in the Briargrove Park neighborhood. Three of those incidents happened just in the last week.

In all instances, deputies said the burglars approach a home in the middle of the day, when most people are at work. If no one answers, they go around back, smash a window and break in.

"We went to the back (of the house) and that's when we noticed that things were in disarray and the window was shattered," said burglary victim Dianna Shepherd.  "At that point, my husband came back and said, 'I think you need to check your jewelry box.'"

So far, no one has been hurt but victims have reported stolen jewelry and cash.

Harris County Pct. 5 deputy constables have stepped up patrols in the area. So far, the only description investigators have is the possible getaway vehicle -- a white or silver Ford sedan.

Deputies said one burglary attempt was thwarted March 31, when a woman failed to answer the knock on the door. As the two suspects walked to her backyard, the homeowner turned on music and scared the men away.
