All lanes of the South Loop have reopened after an 18-wheeler caught on fire Sunday morning, shutting down all lanes of the 610 South Loop East for much of the day.

Houston Fire Department officials said an 18-wheeler caught on fire Sunday morning after hitting the guardrail.

Heavy smoke billowed up from the roadway where the South Loop meets I-45. Both sides of the highway appeared to be burned after the flames were extinguished.

Officials said the 42-year-old driver was able to get out of the truck, but was engulfed in flames and collapsed. He died at the scene.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident. Police said their investigation into the crash is ongoing.
