Boy, 5, left outside home alone after being put on wrong bus

The boy's mom estimates he spent about 15 minutes at home alone

LA PORTE, Texas – A mother said her son was left at home alone after he was put on the wrong bus Tuesday in La Porte.

The mother of 5-year-old Travis McGee says her son was supposed to go, by bus, to martial arts class after school.

Instead his mom said he was put on a school bus at Bayshore Elementary, in La Porte ISD, that dropped him off at their home in La Porte.  She said the house was locked up and she was at work. Her husband was out of town when the martial arts school notified her.

"They found out he was put on the wrong bus. They did not notify me or my husband. They didn't even try. It's Bushi Ban that notified my husband to let him know what had happened," said Gina McGee, Travis McGee's mother.  She told Local 2, "If these people are going to allow for one child to slip through the cracks like this, they don't need to be where they are. This school cannot be trusted."

Travis' mom estimates he spent about 15 minutes at home alone. The school district says it was closer to nine minutes before a bus picked Travis up and took him back to school.

The school district said its workers made a mistake.  The district was looking at its procedures to make sure this does not happen again.
